Banff, AB

It's cold this morning, so I get out the leather tour jacket. You can feel the winter on the edges of the horizon. You can sense it on the edges of the fields, catch it in people's voices. It's a waiting game, but I'm not waiting, I'm driving up into the mountains to double-dare it. Winter and I. We'll play at this a bit longer. I crank up T-Bone Walker on the stereo— the Black and White sessions— pack in an extra large coffee from Tim's. Rollin' now.

I love this drive up the old Cowboy Trail. The foothills, and then the mountains hiding in the clouds beyond. It all moves up slowly.

Yeah, there's winter. I probably won't take too many pictures of it, but these skiffs of snow get my attention. I know what's coming. I just don't know when.

Now I'm up on Table Mountain behind the Banff Centre for the Arts. It's a pretty easy climb, and the trail is pretty well maintained now.

Looks like 'gators on the trail, holding down some seeds and soil. This park sees many visitors, and I'm surprised it is as unspoiled as it is. For sure, this place has changed radically since I first visited in the 1970s. It is a tourist town, where a burger and a beer will set you back $30. Everyone is from somewhere else. Money leaks out through this town, like steam from the hot springs.
